Teen finally gets citizenship and MyKad

KUALA LUMPUR: A 16-year-old student of Malaysian-Filipino parentage will finally obtain his citizenship and MyKad after four years of waiting. This followed the decision yesterday by High Court judge Justice Hue Siew Kheng, who ordered the National Registration Department to issue a MyKad to M. Navin within 30 days. Justice Hue, in her ruling, said that since the status of the boy’s parents did not affect his application, the decision in the first letter dated July 25, 2011, was wrong in law, unjust and too harsh. She said the second letter dated Dec 26, 2012, did not furnish any reason and this amounted to procedural unfairness. “I am satisfied that the defendants’ rejection is unjustified. Therefore, the NRD needs to issue a MyKad within 30 days beginning today (Nov 25),” she said. She ordered the defendants to pay RM8,000 in costs to the applicant. Justice Hue said the applicant was a Malaysian citizen under Article 15A of the Federal Constitution. She further said that the birth certificate issued did not contain the words “bukan warganegara” while the international passport stated that he was a citizen. http://www.thestar.com.my/News/Nation/2014/11/26/Teen-finally-gets-citizenship-and-MyKad/
